We live in a connected world today where knowledge sharing has become easy, and today’s consumers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable of the brands and products they purchase and want to associate with. They are aware of the latest product innovations and trends, and do not want to compromise on quality on any aspect. Consumers are also looking for harm reduction options such as e-cigarettes instead of combustible cigarettes, olive oil instead of refined oil, air fried/pan fried instead of deep fried food items, active carbon filters instead of cardboard roaches as filters etc. They are also looking for technological product innovations. Compare the mobile phone 10 years ago vs now, compare the cars from 30 years ago vs today, compare the computer systems of now vs in 2000. Similarly roaches which have surprisingly been omnipresent till 2023 are being gradually replaced by active carbon filters. We hope some of these frequently asked questions assist in that quest for knowledge in order to make better (and more eco-friendly) purchase decisions.
Are active carbon filters, and activated charcoal filters one and the same? Which are better?
The answer to the question is ‘yes’. They are indeed the same. ‘Active’ is used as a synonym for ‘activated’, and ‘carbon’ is sometimes used to say ‘charcoal’. In fact, charcoal is a form of carbon with a highly porous structure making it great for absorption. The carbon here is ‘activated’, meaning it is exposed to heat in oxygen-less tanks at temperatures going up to 700°C, and then re exposed to heat of up to 1,150°C. This process substantially increases number of pores and the total surface area which enables increased absorption capacity. Thus when smoke containing tar and other carcinogens and harmful substances pass through it, they get attached and absorbed into these tiny holes, thereby reducing the harm from the smoke as it comes out of the filter into a consumers’ lungs.
Do active carbon filters also filter out what one wants to enjoy?
As per select secondary research, these active carbon filters (ACFs) are great in filtering a fair amount of organic molecules via the concept of absorption, but are not efficient in filtering everything. This makes these filters unique and efficient in filtering a great deal of tar and other carcinogens, while not filtering what you would not want filtered. Hence you will not feel a difference in impact of your desired high/nicotine rush.
How are active carbon filters vs cardboard roach filters?
Cardboard roaches which has been used traditionally and widely used even today in India and other countries are not exactly filters as they do not ‘filter’ anything. In fact, they act as just handles to the rolled joint/blunt. Activated carbon filters on the other hand filter a portion of the tar and other harmful organic matter making the drags way smoother, and balance out the heat due to the two ceramic filters which are good thermal insulators.
How many times can I use 1 charcoal smoking filter?
While the filters are technically meant to be used just once and then discarded, but in reality some people use each filter up to two times (i.e. for 2 rolled joints). This is because after this second joint, the multiple pores in the activated charcoal get filled with tar and other harmful substances and the effectiveness of the filter as a harm reduction tool reduces if you overuse each filter.
What is special about the 6mm extra slim size of your activated carbon filters?
Conventionally the active carbon filters were used for smoking tobacco pipes and as a result the diameter requirement of the filter was more, like a 9mm filter. These thicker filters were popularized via brands like Actitube and Vauen Dr Perl. However, for rolled joints the requirement was of thinner diameter. The 6mm dimension is just right for rolling joints as it is neither too thin (like the 5mm diameter) nor it is too fat (like 7mm or above). PEER Next offers 6mm carbon active filters.
What is special about PEER Next vs other active carbon filters?
PEER Next active carbon filters are made with eco-friendly and biodegradable materials including coconut based charcoal and ceramic filters. The active carbon is of top most quality and sourced from a UK based supplier since 1965. The carbon is filled in each of the filters is just the right quantity. Too much charcoal will hamper the smoothness of the drags and result in clogging, while too little will not be as efficient in filtration. The carbon is strained using advance ‘sifting’ technology to ensure there is no carbon dust and that the carbon particles are of the correct size. We believe in consistently delivering unparalleled quality products that use the latest technology.
Should I be using active charcoal filters while rolling? What are the benefits?
There is growing health consciousness and widespread acceptance of harm reduction as a strategy among modern day consumers. Adults want less harmful version of cigarettes, safer cars with multiple airbags, less oily and non-friend food, organic and preservative free beverages and so on. The harm reduction concept also applies to smoking filters. Active carbon filters, unlike cardboard roaches (which technically do not filter anything but serve as a mere ‘handle’ for the joint/blunt), reduce tar, balance heat, and enable smoother drags. They are also eco-friendly and bio degradable and thus less damaging than cellulose acetate (plastic) filters in pre-rolled cigarettes.
Where all in the world are active carbon filters used?
Active carbon filters or activated carbon filters are now being widely using for rolled joints in Western countries. The trend first picked up in Germany as the initial brands that made these filters were from Germany. The usage of the product in Germany has become mainstream and these filters are available in almost every tobacconist or cannabis shop in the country. The trend then picked up in other European countries like Italy, France, UK, and Netherlands (particularly Amsterdam) etc., followed by USA. Awareness of these filters has now reached India is 2023. It is a matter of time before these filters become the norm in India as well.
What are the other applications of carbon filters?
Active carbon filters (ACFs) have a wide range of acceptability as they are capable of reducing the pollutants in both gaseous as well as liquid form. They work on the concept of absorption and are used extensively in air purifiers, water treatment plants, air conditioners, odour control devices, alcohol purification, industrial applications such as in the metals industry etc. They have also been in use as smoking filters for pipes, and since 2020 are being increasingly used as smoking filters for rolled joints.
Why are activated charcoal smoking filters so expensive?
The cheapest option is of course the typical cardboard roaches. People make them from business cards to book covers, and they do not cost anything. But accordingly is the usefulness of roaches – they do zero filtration as there is no filtering mechanism installed. It is simply a holder for the joint. Active carbon filters on the other hand are a recent product innovation with value additions such as 2 side ceramic caps and activated charcoal, which balance the heat, reduce tar and other carcinogens, and make the drag smoother. These materials are expensive and hence a higher cost. However, a part of the cost is also contributed by the profits the foreign brands make and the high cost of final packing and transportation in Western countries. We at PEER Next believe in keeping our margins to the minimal and are able to save on final packing and transportation costs since these costs are generally lower in India, and are therefore able to pass some of those savings to end consumers by offering a competitive retail price while providing the best export-quality products. We believe that in order for the product category to become mainstream the retail price needs to be in a price sweet spot so that more and more adult users can switch over from roaches to carbon filters.
